BEIRUT: Lebanese prosecutors plan to question on Thursday former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn, who escaped from Japan late last year while awaiting trial on bail, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported Wednesday.
The questioning, to be conducted based on a Japanese request made through Interpol, is expected to cover charges filed against him in relation to the major Japanese automaker, according to the news agency.
Ghosn has been indicted in Japan on suspicion of underreporting his executive pay from Nissan in violation of Japan's financial instruments and exchange law and illegally diverting Nissan funds to a Lebanese investment firm effectively owned by him through an Omani sales agent.
Ghosn, who has Lebanese citizenship, will be questioned also over his past entry into Israel. Lebanon's government obliges its citizens to boycott Israel.
Lebanese authorities have refused to meet Japan's request for sending Ghosn back to the country over the financial misconduct charges, while showing a stance of carrying out investigations of the former Nissan boss in Lebanon as needed.
