J-Pop duo YOASOBI, Vocaloid artist Hatsune Miku, and Japanese alt-pop group ATARASHII GAKKO! will be performing at the annual popular music festival Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this April.

Considered one of the most popular music festivals in the United States, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, known as Coachella, is an annual music and arts festival that celebrates musical arts from all over the world.

The lineup for this year’s festival, which will take place over two consecutive weekends in April, was announced on Wednesday, featuring a variety of notable Japanese artists.

YOASOBI rose to fame in 2020 as their debut single, “Racing Into the Night,” topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100 charts for six consecutive weeks, making the song a viral hit on the short-form content creation application TikTok.

The duo continued to release chart-topping hits, such as the theme song for the anime ‘Oshi no Ko’ titled Idol, which topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100 charts for 21 consecutive weeks, becoming the longest-running number one song in Japan Billboard Chart history as well as the highest charted Japanese act on the Billboard Global 200.

The song also broke the record for the fastest song to earn 500 million streams in Japan within 28 weeks and won Song of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan.

YOASOBI will perform at Coachella on April 12, the first day of the festival, as well as on April 19.

Furthermore, Hatsune Miku is a virtual idol known for her long, blue hair. Miku was developed as a singing voice synthesizer, also known as Vocaloid, by Crypton Future Media.

Miku has gained massive popularity in Japan since debuting in 2007 and has become a significant part of the Japanese music industry with her own dedicated fanbase. The virtual idol has performed sold-out 3D concerts worldwide. She was supposed to perform at Coachella 2020, but the festival was canceled due to COVID-19.

Miku will perform on April 13, the second day of the festival, as well as on April 20.

Formed in 2015, ATARASHII GAKKO! is a girl group that recently went viral in 2023 for their song “Tokyo Calling,” which led them to make their American television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The group will perform on April 14, the third day of the festival, as well as on April 21.

Japanese artists have been slowly becoming a staple of the music festival. In 2018, X Japan and Otoboke Beaver made history by becoming the first Japanese groups to perform at the well-known festival, while in 2019, the J-pop group Perfume became the first girl group to perform there.

In 2022, the first edition after the pandemic, Japanese singers Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Joji performed at the festival; however, the latter’s set was cut short due to health issues.

Furthermore, other performers in Coachella this year include, but are not limited to, Korean girl group LE SSERAFIM, who released their second Japanese EP in 2023 and performed the theme song of the Japanese drama ‘300 Yen: How to Enrich Life.’

The group, which includes Japanese singer Sakura Miyawaki, a former member of Japan’s top-selling girl group AKB48, has collaborated with a variety of Japanese artists, such as Ado and Imase.
