TOKYO: One of the allied groups of the Syrian Liberation Organization (HTS), which led the fight to depose President Bashaar Assad, is also involved in China and aims to liberate the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, according to a report by Fuji TV.

The Turkistan Islamic Party has a cooperative relationship with HTS and fought alongside them in the battle against the Assad regime. The Turkistan Islamic Party has connections to Afghanistan, but also has strong hostility toward the Chinese government, the report states.

After the collapse of the Assad regime, Turkistan Islamic Party fighters sent out videos and messages of training and fighting in Syria, emphasizing jihad against China, leading some observers to say that Xi Jinping might ask HTS to put pressure on the Turkistan Islamic Party.

The commentary says there is also a risk that the Islamic State will take advantage of the chaos in Syria. There are reports that the number of terrorist attacks by the Islamic State in Syria has tripled this year compared to 2023.

HTS’s predecessor, the Jabhat al-Nusra Front, was created with the support of the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI). Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq, appointed Abu Muhammad Jawlani – now the HTS leader – as the head of the Jabhat al-Nusra Front, which received many weapons and personnel from the Islamic State of Iraq.
