TOKYO: In an official response to the bombing by the United States of three nuclear-related facilities in Iran, Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan, Japan highlighted the “threat” of Iran’s nuclear program indirectly seemingly expressing understanding of these attacks, and warned against possible Iranian retaliation on American interests.
“Japan has consistently expressed serious concern over Iran’s nuclear issue based on the position that Iran’s development of nuclear weapons must never be allowed for the sake of maintaining the international nuclear non-proliferation regime,” according to an official statement issued in the name of Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi on Monday morning.
Minister Iwaya observed that prior to the American bombing, negotiations between the US and Iran, intended to peacefully resolve the nuclear issue, had been suspended. He emphasized that Japan strongly supports these talks and has urged Iran not to miss the opportunity to reach an agreement.
The attacks on Iran by Israel on June 13, which Japan strongly condemned, and the subsequent retaliatory attacks by Iran have been described as ‘extremely regrettable,’ reinforcing Japan’s position on the issue.
The statement emphasized the importance of de-escalation and dialogue, reiterating that Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons must be prevented.
Minister Iwaya concluded by reaffirming Japan’s commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. He assured the audience that Japan would continue to make all necessary diplomatic efforts in collaboration with the international community.
