TOKYO: The Japanese and US governments on Wednesday signed a document to extend for one year through the end of March 2022 their pact on Tokyo’s host-nation support for US troops in the country, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said.

The document was signed by Motegi and Joseph Young, charge d’affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Tokyo.

At a press conference, Motegi said that he wants the Diet, Japan’s parliament, to proceed with deliberations so that the renewed pact will take effect by the end of next month.

On Feb. 17, the Japanese and US governments agreed on the one-year extension of the current pact while keeping Japan’s financial burden of hosting US troops at around the current levels.

Japan’s share of costs for the troops in fiscal 2021, which starts in April, will total 201.7 billion yen.
