TOKYO: Japan’s Sakura Yosozumi won a gold medal in the women’s park skateboarding at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday.

Including the victory of Yosozumi, 19, Japan has so far taken gold medals in all three events of skateboarding, which made its Olympic debut in Tokyo.

Fellow Japanese competitor Kokona Hiraki, 12, grabbed silver in the park event, in which Japan’s Misugu Okamoto, 15, came fourth.

Hiraki became Japan’s youngest Summer Olympic medalist in the post-World War II period, outstripping Momiji Nishiya, who won gold in the women’s street skateboarding last week at the age of 13.

Also on Wednesday, Japanese wrestler Yukako Kawai clinched gold in the women’s 62-kilogram division. Her elder sister, Risako, reached the 57 kg final.

Japanese boxer Tsukimi Namiki captured bronze in the women’s flyweight division.

In baseball, Japan beat South Korea 5-2 to reach the final, scheduled for Saturday.

So far in the Tokyo Games, Japanese athletes have won 21 gold medals, seven silvers and 12 bronzes for a total of 40 medals, one away from the record of 40 for Japan in any Olympics.

The Japanese women’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals for the first time, by edging out Belgium 86-85.

In men’s table tennis team event, Japan lost to Germany in the semifinals.

In the first round of the women’s golf tournament, Japanese players Nasa Hataoka and Mone Inami both finished 1-under-par and stood at 16th.

Yuka Saso, representing the Philippines, was 47th. She has dual citizenship in Japan and the Philippines.
