TOKYO: Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki agreed with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday to cooperate closely over the two countries’ responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In a videoconference, the two confirmed that they must show to Russia that “reckless actions will come at a high price.”

Suzuki told Yellen that Japan’s restrictions on dealings with Russia’s central bank have already been in place following cabinet approval.

He also said that Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko and other individuals as well as organizations of the country involved in the invasion are subject to an asset freeze.

In a press conference the same day, Suzuki said that the sanctions against the Russian central bank are working as the ruble has plunged.

The minister added that “it is important to closely monitor with a sense of caution” the impact of the series of sanctions on the Japanese economy and financial markets.
