Senior Japanese and U.S. diplomats affirmed Wednesday the importance of cooperation among their countries and South Korea to tackle North Korea's repeated provocations.
At a meeting in Tokyo, Shigeki Takizaki, director-general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, and Stephen Biegun, U.S. special representative for North Korea, agreed that the three nations will work closely to deal with North Korea, which continues to threaten the allied countries by suggesting an intercontinental ballistic missile launch.
Takizaki and Biegun also exchanged views about easing sanctions against North Korea, as suggested by China and Russia.
Later on Wednesday, Biegun held talks with Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Akiba.
U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Biegun as the next deputy secretary of state.
