TOKYO: Under the framework of the Council of Europe, the “Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation Against Ukraine” was established and Japan has decided to join the Register as an Associate Member.

The Register falls under the Council of Europe for the purpose of registering evidence and claims relating to damage caused by the Russian Federation’s wrongful acts against Ukraine on or after February 24, 2022, the date of its invasion, the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said.

Japan, as an observer state of the Council of Europe, decided to participate in the Register as an Associate Member from the perspective of supporting Ukraine.

States and organizations can participate either as a Participant or an Associate Member. As of May 16, 41 countries and international organizations, including Japan, have joined the Register as a Participant or Associate Member.
