RIYADH: The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said America will not tolerate Iran putting it at risk.

Pompeo was speaking after President Donald Trump said he had ordered the US military to attack and destroy any Iranian vessel that harasses US Navy ships.

His comments on Wednesday came in a wide-ranging telephonic round table with seven selected journalists from around the world.

Pompeo answered questions relating to efforts to combat coronavirus, the US position towards the World Health Organization, Iran and China as well as recent positions relating to talk of his country considering a possible halt of oil imports from the world’s biggest producers.

Last week, US Navy ships were circled by a number of small fast boast from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in international waters in the northern Arabian Gulf.

The US threat to respond militarily to future incidents comes after the US has stepped up its military presence against Iran in the region in response to a string of hostile incidents.

“The president's statement this morning made clear that we will not tolerate putting our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines at risk, that we are going to defend ourselves,” Pompeo said.

He said Trump had always made that “we will do everything we need to do to make sure that our forces are as safe and secure as we can possibly make them.”
