The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) will showcase its innovative model for sustainable development in AlUla, which is home to Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site of Madain Saleh, also known as Hegra site, at the 10th World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi on Feb. 8, 2020.

Covering an area of more than 22,000 sq km in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, AlUla is being developed as an open-air living museum for the world. Placing urban regeneration at its core, the site has progressively developed into alignment with the Forum’s theme, “Connecting Culture and Innovation.”

The plans are built on The Charter of AlUla, a framework document that includes 12 guiding principles that commit the RCU to long-term future development. This ensures that the natural and cultural landscapes are safeguarded in the process of developing AlUla as a global heritage, arts and culture destination.

Additionally, RCU is committed to unleash the potential present within the 45,000 people that work and live in the area. This will be done through the regeneration programme, which is aimed at skill enhancement and prosperity acceleration through infrastructure development and implementation of community initiatives to improve education and healthcare facilities.

AlUla residents will be given the opportunity to create their own businesses and will be provided world-class training and higher education in key sectors, ranging from hospitality and catering, to archaeology, wildlife management and business degrees in Australia, France, the UK and US.

The presence of RCU at the Forum will demonstrate the ways in which the guiding principles are being implemented through a comprehensive master planning process that incorporates global best practice.

“The commission’s strategy mirrors that of the forum with our belief in culture as a pillar of sustainable development and the contribution it makes to the long-term regeneration of urban areas,” said RCU CEO Amr Al-Madani.
