DUBAI: The first trailer of the upcoming adaptation of the Mortal Kombat video game has been released.

The trailer offered a closer look at the plot points that were teased in previous promotional posters. The film, which will be released April 16, stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson.

The story follows a new character to Mortal Kombat, Cole Young, who is introduced to a historic combat ring, in which he must fight for his survival against a series of popular characters, including Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden and Kano.

Some of the moves boasted in the trailer also include arms ripped from sockets, kunai blades going through heads, and one character appearing to get sliced in half through a wall.

The gory story travels through New York, rural Japan and other dark arenas.
