While the exact escape route of Carlos Ghosn remains a mystery, it is very unlikely, he escaped Japan via South Korea by a private jet or on a boat from cities west of Japan, a South Korean official source told Arab News Japan.

Travel from that region is reportedly not monitored very strictly by Japanese immigration and at some ports passports' control is not as strict when it is for package tours.

"If the reported private jet that was used to carry Ghosn left Japan to South Korea, it will be a rare case for such jets coming from there.

“It will most likely be a Korean private jet if at all there was a jet coming to and from Korea, and this is quite strange for a trip that is not for a high government official or a world class celebrity, where preparations are made clear to the public and the local media.

“It is known that top rich wealthy families in Korea have private jets and for a fugitive to use such transportation will bring attention,” the source said noting that refueling stop is also not a very good idea to select South Korea for that is not a good transit location.”

He said South Korea is basically a destination rather than a transition point such as Hong Kong and Singapore.

“If the escape was by ship, then the fugitive will have to deal with a Korean immigration that's tougher than in Japan,” the source said.

“Coming as a passenger on a commercial airplane via airports is not impossible but would be "weird because Ghosn is not ethnic Korean nor Japanese and he will be easily identified by normal people even if he used special cosmetics or customs. The passport would not be a big issue there as much as the appearance and the logistics that Ghosn would not really be interested to go through via Asian airports."
