Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono expressed his country's determination to help ensure peace in the Middle East, during phone talks with his Iranian counterpart on Thursday.

Kono told Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami that Japan will make diplomatic efforts to bring peace and stability back to the Middle East.

The Japanese minister made the remarks when he briefed Hatami about Tokyo's plans to send Self-Defense Forces troops to the region.

During the conversations, Kono also asked Iran for cooperation to ensure the safety of Japan-related ships navigating through the Strait of Hormuz.

"There was no negative response" from Hatami, Kono told reporters after the talks with the Iranian minister.
